Synopsis

Sensei brought Wakana to her favorite restaurant in the Urban District, which positively surprises her. He monologues on how this might be interpreted as him being a good friend, but he disagrees since he usually wouldn't do something like this and couldn't find the place without help, only remembering it after entering. Which means he also remembers that this was the table they had during their last visit, assuming it's her preferred table. He also knows that she would prefer being with Osako instead of him, but tries his best to make her visit enjoyable.

Sensei wonders if she will consider wearing something with different colors since those would also look good on a beautiful girl like her, but Wakana reminds him that she's a woman and more mature than the "miniature devils" she teaches. He jokingly replies that he has to return the dress he bought for her birthday, though she doubts he even knows when it is. He guesses it's around Halloween, which was actually close, meaning he still has some time to buy an actual gift before that date. She wants to know when his birthday is so she might buy him one as well, but he doesn't know since no one told him yet and he still hasn't his ID, something Wakana finds hard to believe since it would make certain things more difficult.

Sensei ignores it and wants to know what she would like as a present, and she wishes for another person she could talk to at work, i.e. wanting him to return to school. He tries to say something, but Wakana interrupts him, explaining that she can understand that he went through something horrible and needs time to heal, but she would like to have someone else outside of Imani and Rika to converse with at work, and if he doesn't become that someone until the end of the school year, she will personally and gently dismember him and bury his remains. Knowing that the year will never end and that Wakana will most likely never know, he promises to do as he's told, convincing himself that he technically didn't lie.

Wakana wants to celebrate with some booze, but Sensei wants to learn more about her childhood. Since its a rather random request, she asks why he wants to know about it, and when he explains that he often stumbles on things that remind him of his and wants to compare it to the past of others, specifically if they were happy during this time, she instantly agrees.

Due to her having to go through surgery for most of her early years, she begins with her time in elementary school. Even then, she was a gloomy, quiet and closed-off as she is today, which resulted in her being an outcast. Sana would be the closest comparison, but unlike her, she never managed to socialize with others, partly due to her physical condition making it difficult to properly do so, partly because she just didn't want to since she was more interested in poetry. Sensei wants to see a picture of her during that time, but she has no pictures of that time with her or on her social media, only those of flowers.

Back to her past, her attitude stayed the same even through her high school and most of her college years. She still didn't care about socializing, especially since other people tend to be shallow and don't bother to try and understand others, instead expecting to become close friends right away. She firmly believed that something like that is impossible, until it suddenly changed one particular day. That day was when Osako had to read "To the River" in front of the class, which was Wakana's favorite poem. While Osako was embarrassed and shy during the entire reading, it impressed Wakana to the point where she felt a close bond with her.

Wakana apologizes for not having the relatable past he was looking for, but she hopes he can find the same life-altering moment that makes him realize why he's here – He states he might one day. Both finish their meal and check if Wakana's pictures, but as she said, they're only of flowers. One of them, however, gives him a sliver of hope, and Wakana sends him that one after he asks for it.

After bringing her home, he stares at the picture on his way back, knowing it isn't the things that tells him he's here, but it's close.
